Mission Day 23/24
The Centurion's Servant
On Mission Day, Year 4 students embarked on an insightful journey into the Gospel story of the Centurion's servant. The day began with reading our story from the Gospel.
The story, from the Gospel of Matthew (8:5-13) and Luke (7:1-10), revolves around a Roman Centurion who approaches Jesus, seeking healing for his paralyzed and suffering servant.
Despite being a Gentile and an officer in the Roman army, the Centurion demonstrates profound faith, expressing his belief that Jesus can heal his servant with just a word. Impressed by the Centurion's faith, Jesus heals the servant from a distance, highlighting the power of faith and the inclusivity of God's love.
To help the children engage with the story, a series of interactive activities were organized. The students participated in role-playing exercises, re-enacting the scenes to better understand the emotions and significance of the characters' actions. They also created art projects depicting a shield that they will keep on their hearts to show Jesus is always with them.
Discussions followed, where the meaning of the story was explored. The children learned that the story teaches us about the power of faith, the importance of humility, and the boundless nature of God's compassion. It shows that faith is not confined to a particular group but is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or status. The Centurion's example encourages us to trust in God's power and to approach Him with humility and confidence.
Mission Day for Year 4 was a profound experience, deepening their understanding of the Gospel and its relevance to their lives. The story of the Centurion's servant reminds us that faith and humility are powerful, and God's love and healing are available to all who believe.
